Police Dept.'s

Special Press Release on Walmart Fire

Released August 25th, 2022

At approximately 7:20 pm on August 24th, 2022, Peachtree City emergency personnel responded to the Wal-Mart located at 2717 West Hwy 54 in regards to an active structure fire. Three responding police officers that went inside the building to ensure everyone was evacuated suffered smoke inhalation injuries. Those officers were treated and released from Fayette Piedmont Hospital later in the evening.

The Peachtree City Fire Department, with assistance from Coweta County, Fayetteville, and Fayette County Fire Departments battled the fire throughout the night until it was extinguished around 4 am. There was sufficient water pressure available and the store’s sprinkler system did function as designed. The store did suffer extensive damage to the interior and roof. There is no current timeline on when the store will be reopened.

Preliminary investigation suggests the fire was intentionally set.

Thankfully, no one was seriously injured because of this fire.

The Peachtree City Police Department is asking for anyone with information about the cause of the fire to contact Sgt. Brad Milstein at bmilstein@peachtree-city.org. You can also submit an anonymous tip over the phone at 770-487-6010 or online here.

Peachtree City will recognize International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31, 2022, by lighting its bridges and tunnels purple. This is not the first year that the city has undertaken this dramatic visual approach to acknowledge its losses as well as to express solidarity with those committed to ending overdose.

Firefighter/EMT I Jeff Keyros named Rotary Firefighter of the Year.

(FF/E Jeff Keyros pictured above with Past Rotary President Steve Ivory)

Delayed due to COVID but not denied, the Rotary Club of Peachtree City named Firefighter/EMT I Jeff Keyros its 2021 Firefighter of the Year at a recent meeting.

In 2021, Jeff took on a new position within the Training Division. He was primarily responsible for the coordination and administration of the Fire Training Officer (FTO) program and for establishing a practical training regimen within the Department. As coordinator of the FTO program, he shepherded new employees through the indoctrination process and ensured that each designated FTO had the tools and information necessary to successfully train their respective subordinates.

He created a “Firefighter Field Day,” scheduling a designated time that crews could conduct practical training scenarios spanning myriad diverse firefighting skills, vastly facilitating the learning process. This has significantly enhanced the efficiency of our crews while operating at the scene of an incident. Jeff has also been instrumental in creating major training evolutions such as our April Live Burn and various other drills. He designed scenarios for crews to run, constructed all props or training aids needed, and conducted each event in a safe manner.

A consummate professional, Jeff is constantly learning and researching new techniques to instill upon our crews. He is an excellent fire instructor, both thorough and meticulous in his planning and execution. His positive attitude toward all endeavors is contagious. He leads by example by keeping physically fit, and wearing his uniform with great pride. Dedicated to his craft and respectful to all, Jeff has rightfully earned to be the recipient of this honorable award.

Congratulations Firefighter/EMT I Jeff Keyros!

Peachtree City's rich history of progressive planning for the future...

Peachtree City has been one of Georgia's first Planned Communities. In the early 1960s, the original vision for Peachtree City was based on the Garden Cities movement, in the first documented Master Plan of 1972. The 1985 Comprehensive Plan predated the state's Planning Act by four years but included considerable community participation and outreach. Then again the Comp plan was updated in 1992 and in subsequent years. Our City's Comprehensive Plans have reflected our community's values and guided development to help make Peachtree City the beautiful and vibrant place that it is today.

After months of public workshops, committee meetings, surveys, and two public hearings, the Mayor and Council adopted the city's most recent comprehensive plan on August 18, 2022.

McIntosh’s van Zyl wins big at Invention Convention

Invention Convention Worldwide teaches students problem-identification, problem-solving, entrepreneurship, and creativity skills and builds confidence in invention, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The K-12 invention education program convenes a global community of educators, business leaders, parents, and students through competitions, events, and a flexible, project-based curriculum aligned to educational standards.

Marc van Zyl, a senior at McIntosh, won three awards at the Invention Convention U.S. Nationals at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. His winning invention named Athegia, is a habit-changing at-home medical monitoring device for seniors with chronic diseases. Zyl placed 2nd overall in his grade level and won the Raytheon IoT Connectivity Award of $1,000. He also won the Cantor Colburn Patent Application Award for a free legal filing of his patent. He advanced to Nationals after winning the best-in-category Health and Medical Technology Award at the Georgia Tech K-12 InVenture Prize.

Marc may look familiar, that is due to the fact that as a student at J.C. Booth Middle, he demonstrated a device he developed at the STEMIE Coalition’s 2018 National Invention Convention, where he took best in show in the Technologies/Wearables category.

Great job Marc, and keep on inventing.
