Dr. King's work still goes on.

Peachtree City CERT team assists Griffin storm clean-up

Peachtree City avoided major damage, but our CERT teams still mobilized to help Griffin-Spalding County clean up and recover from the weather's impact.

CERT teams are community volunteers who support police, fire and other agencies during disaster situations. CERT teams taking a more active role in emergency preparedness for their communities, allowing professional first responders to focus on more complex tasks.

They receive training in many areas such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.

The next round of Peachtree City CERT training starts February 23rd and continues every Thursday until May 4.

City officials embrace new Bobcat store

Local officials and other business leaders welcomed Bobcat of Atlanta to Peachtree City Thursday for the grand opening of a new store.

Bobcat, a global manufacturer of construction equipment, continued its expansion in the metro area. The new Peachtree City location on Dividend Drive is the seventh launched by Bobcat of Atlanta around the metro area.

"We love having businesses come in," new City Council Member Clint Holland said at the ribbon cutting. "It means both development and redevelopment is still happening in and around Peachtree City."

Branch manager Jonah Gallman indicated the new store would make Bobcat more available, providing parts, service, rentals and sales.

Fayette County Chamber of Commerce President Colin Martin held the bright red ribbon while Gallman cut it with special scissors, officially opening Bobcat for business.

"Let's move some equipment here!," Martin said to applause.

Lane Closure at Robinson Road 12/18-12/19

Weather permitting (the forecast isn't looking good), the Booth Middle School contractor will pave the deceleration lane that turns into Stagecoach from Robinson Road.

The work is scheduled for Wednesday, January 18 and Thursday, January 19 (again, weather permitting). This will require the shut down of one lane on Robinson Road while paving takes place.

Work will be done during the day between the opening and closing of school. This will help minimize traffic disruptions.

Please use caution in the area.

Peachtree City church gives to college scholarship fund

The academic dreams of Fayette County's students received a boost from Peachtree City's Southside Church.

Jason Dixon, Southside's lead pastor, presented Fayette County Schools Superintendent Dr. Jonathan Patterson and county coordinator Virginia Gibbs with a check for the REACHGa scholarship program.

REACH Georgia is a statewide needs-based mentorship and scholarship program.

It provides academically promising students who have a demonstrated financial need with the academic, social, and financial support to help make their dreams of college and a bright future a reality.

For each scholar, $4,000 is raised in contributions from local businesses and the community, with the remainder coming from the state REACHGa Foundation funding.

When REACHGa scholars graduate, they receive a $10,000 scholarship which can be used at any Hope-eligible college, university, or technical school in Georgia.

Many of the students may be first in their family to go to college.

Southside Church included the REACHGa scholarship program as part of the BeRich giving campaign at their church.

The donation will make it possible to receive matching funds from the state REACHGa organization to name several new 8th grade REACHGa scholars in 2023.

How Georgia responded to the Holocaust

The Georgia Commission on the Holocaust continues its exhibit at the Peachtree City library throughout January.

"Georgia's Response to the Holocaust: Survivors and Liberators" tells the stories of 17 Georgians who experienced history from diverse backgrounds and regions of Europe.

These stories are told on 18-panels that travel to libraries across Georgia.

The exhibit, sponsored by the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust, strives to preserve the Holocaust's memory and promote public understanding of such a horrible time in human history.

Sign up for Citizen Police Academy

How do cops do their job?

The Peachtree City police department aims to answer that question at its annual citizens' police academy.

Now in its 21st year, the citizens' police academy teaches residents how crime scenes are processed, how traffic laws are enforced, and how officers take a suspect into custody while protecting themselves and others from harm.

The 10-week course also includes a ride-along with an officer and a tour of the 911 communications center.

Applications for the citizens' police academy are now being accepted. Participants must be at least 18 years old and pass a background check.
