Pauline Hopkins' "Talma Gordon"

Race & American Culture Series

For Adults

Sunday, October 2, 2022

2:00 p.m.

Sharon Forks Library

Explore the appeal of mystery stories and why they are ideal for addressing controversial topics through "Talma Gordon," the first published black murder mystery, with Dr. Ian Afflerbach of UNG.

Pauline Hopkins (1859-1930) was a singer, actress, and writer who helped start The Colored American Magazine, this nation's first monthly periodical focused on African American culture. Although her magazine essays and stories were popular in their time, she was--like so many talented black Americans--forgotten by white critics. We will discuss "Talma Gordon," thinking about the structure and appeal of mystery stories and why they might be an ideal format for getting American readers to think about controversial topics.
