Middle Georgia Regional Library News - March 1, 2023

We have truly been a reading bunch so far this year. We've kicked the year off with our Bicentennial Reading Challenge on Beanstack, joining the city of Macon in celebrating the city turning 200. In February we added the Black History Reading Challenge which featured a variety of books in our African American Collection showcasing African American culture and contributions from past to present.

Have you found yourself in a bit of a book rut lately? Has it been difficult to find your next big read? Perhaps you've reached the end of a series you've been enjoying and now you don't know where to turn?

I encourage you to download the Libby app to your personal device and take a look at the collections on the home page that have been curated by our librarians. They are full of recommendations for you. Fun fact: collections like "I read what I want" and "Recently Added" were created by our very own Head of Collections, Melanie Duncan!

Now, if a more one-on-one reader's recommendation experience is your preference, please consider setting up a Book Chat with our Adult Literacy Librarian, Rebekah. You'll have a brief discussion with her about your current reading interests and she'll help you find materials that meet your needs. You can set an appointment with her by visiting the Washington Memorial Library or giving the Reference Desk a call at 478-310-2130.

We are in the final days of accepting submissions for the Art of Reading Student Art Competition. Recently, the competition opened to allow all Bibb County Students in grades K-12 to participate, which means if your learning institution is in Macon-Bibb County you may participate.

Students are to use the inspiration of a book they have read to create an
original work of art. They will then submit their work for a chance to win a $50 Amazon gift card! The winners will have their work featured in a special tour and displayed in each Macon-Bibb public library for the rest of the year!

The brochure and submission application can be found with your student's Fine Arts instructor as well as here.

Storytimes range from 30 minutes to an hour featuring stories read aloud, songs, the occasional puppet show, and hands-on activities.

The Macon-Bibb Libraries Endowment Fund at the Community Foundation of Central Georgia was created to endow the future of the Macon-Bibb County libraries and will help us continue our mission to connect all people to the information necessary to improve their lives through excellent services and materials.

Be a part of building the future. A new public library located at 5494 Forsyth Road will serve North and West Bibb Macon. Nestled in a diverse residential area the property includes a great outdoor space and pavilion perfect for outdoor programming. It is currently comprised of four structures, one of which the Macon-Bibb Friends of the Library use as their bookstore and workroom, with future plans to transform existing structures into a functional library space.
