Job Summary

This position is responsible for operating road maintenance equipment.

Major Duties

- Operates mowers.
- Inspects equipment.
- Mows rights-of-way.
- Places caution sign regarding mowers.
- Repairs signs and small engines.
- Performs related duties.

- Knowledge of mower operations.
- Knowledge of safety protocol.
- Skill in training other employees.
- Skill in equipment operation and maintenance.
- Skill in effective communication.

Supervisory Controls

- The Road Superintendent assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines

- Guidelines include equipment safety guidelines, traffic safety regulations, and the Mitchell County employee handbook. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

Complexity/Scope Of Work

- The work consists of varied equipment operation duties. Inclement weather and equipment malfunction contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to operate equipment necessary for road maintenance. Success in this position helps ensure clear, clean, and safe roads.

Contacts                                                          

- Contacts are typically with mowers, inmates, the Sheriff’s department, co-workers, emergency personnel, vendors, and the general public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information and to provide services.

Physical Demands/ Work Environment         

- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and utilizes a sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed outside, occasionally in cold or inclement weather, or a very noisy place. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and contagious or infectious diseases or irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.

None.

Minimum Qualifications

- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
