Mayor Learnard receives award from Rotary Club

The Peachtree City Rotary Club welcomed Mayor Kim Learnard to their meeting last week.

The mayor delivered her annual state of the city address and took questions from those in attendance.

Learnard also introduced the new city manager, Bob Curnow, to the group.

Following her remarks, Mayor Learnard received the “Paul Harris Fellow” award. A $1,000 donation was also made in her name to the Rotary Club.

Booth Middle School student gives back on MLK Day

Grace Cannon and her sons, Noah and Rowan, spent two hours picking up trash from Walt Banks Road to Kedron Elementary School, along a stretch known as Hawk Alley. They collected two buckets of trash and say they'll be back again to keep Peachtree City beautiful.

"[This is] just an impromptu act of service that started with my son's Booth social studies teacher encouraging students to spend MLK day doing an act of community service," Cannon said.

Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday is celebrated nationally as a designated day of service, one of only two days recognized as such by Congress.

King's words -- "No work is insignificant. All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.” -- are meant to inspire Americans to spend the King holiday giving back in any way they can.

"Taking the time to pickup some trash and putting it into the bins around town is something we can all do," Cannon said.

"We've scoped out our next trail to clean and plan to do more each weekend; this time recycling the plastics."

Georgia's Response to the Holocaust:

Library Exhibit Through January 26

The Georgia Commission on the Holocaust continues its exhibit at the Peachtree City library throughout January.

"Georgia's Response to the Holocaust: Survivors and Liberators" tells the stories of 17 Georgians who experienced history from diverse backgrounds and regions of Europe.

These stories are told on 18-panels that travel to libraries across Georgia.

The exhibit, sponsored by the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust, strives to preserve the Holocaust's memory and promote public understanding of such a horrible time in human history.

Sign up for Citizen Police Academy

How do cops do their job?

The Peachtree City police department aims to answer that question at its annual citizens' police academy.

Now in its 21st year, the citizens' police academy teaches residents how crime scenes are processed, how traffic laws are enforced, and how officers take a suspect into custody while protecting themselves and others from harm.

The 10-week course also includes a ride-along with an officer and a tour of the 911 communications center.

Applications for the citizens' police academy are now being accepted. Participants must be at least 18 years old and pass a background check.
