Sci-fi for people who don't really like sci-fi.

The Ministry for the Future, by Kim Stanley Robinson
Moving and painful and hopeful and inspiring, and utterly absorbing.  What's it about? It's about everything, but primarily global warming. The horrors we are unleashing are laid out clearly. This is a call to stop and think and change. Kim Stanley Robinson places global warming firmly in the context of our neoliberal lifestyle and expectations - continuous growth - as if cancer is the paradigm for our society. He pulls in everything - the lack of parity between developed and developing nations, potential technological solutions, the need to sort out global finances and the super-rich if we are going to get any change on this. He segues smoothly between the near past and the future, carrying you along, making this feel almost like reportage, rather than fiction. There are many voices here, all with their own stories.  The main characters are Frank, a young relief worker, and Mary, the "Minister for the Future". Their paths intersect in an unexpected way in Zurich, but their stories weave around each other, they don't really merge.  This is not an action-packed thriller. It's thoughtful and densely packed. It's a book you'll want to badger people to read.

A Canticle for Leibowitz, by Walter M. Miller Jr.
Published in 1959, Walter M. Miller Jr. won the Hugo in 1961 and it became a mainstream bestseller. It’s not only considered a science-fiction classic, but also a literary masterpiece.

The plot begins with Brother Francis on a vigil in the desert. The world has fallen into a new Dark Age. With the help of a mysterious Wanderer, he discovered a fallout shelter with preserved ancient documents from before the “Flame Deluge.” Some of the documents appear to be written by his order’s founder, Leibowitz. Brother Francis and his order attempt to have Leibowitz canonized due to establishment of the Order and his preservation of pre-war knowledge. The second part of the novel sees the ending of the Dark Ages and a Renaissance begins. In the backdrop of warring city states, the Order continues to preserve and study the Leibowitz knowledge and one Brother Kornhoer, develops a treadmill-powered electrical generator. In the third section, we jump forward in time significantly (around 600 years?) and mankind now has starships and colonies on distant worlds as well as nuclear weapons. A city-level nuclear attack occurs and much of the third section deals with the Order both sheltering refugees and preparing for potential nuclear annihilation.

Red Clocks, by Leni Zumas
Brilliant novel made up of the combined perspectives of four women living in a near-future United States where an amendment granting Personhood to the Unborn has outlawed both abortion and IVF and given the constitutional rights of life, liberty, and property to a bundle of cells in one’s uterus.

There’s the Biographer who teaches history and writes and desperately wants a child. There’s the Mender, descended from pirates and lonely but resigned to her wooded hermitage with a prickly cat, a hen, and two goats. There’s the Daughter, very concerned with both her application to the summer Oregon Math Academy and an unplanned pregnancy. There’s the Wife, who owns the house on the hill and has two young sprites, but feels like she’s failing at motherhood and finds the entire enterprise less fulfilling than she suspects her law career might have been.

The lives of these four women in the small coastal town of Newville, OR are interspersed with the life of 19th century female arctic explorer Eivør Mínervudottír. Eivør’s life experience rejecting societal expectations, fighting for an education and profession in spite of her gender, and cold, lonely death on the polar ice are of course all too relevant to the other characters’ present day.
