This year’s Summer Reading Program starts tomorrow (Saturday, June 4th) with our kickoff carnival! Join us 10 AM to 2 PM for food, fun, games, and prizes! Be sure to register for the summer reading program while you’re here if you haven’t already — some of this summer’s programs do require pre-registration to attend.
What does Summer Reading encompass? A lot. You can see just our first week’s events in this newsletter are taking up a great amount of space! There’s performances, art, games, storytimes, and robots. We’ve got something for everyone.
Summer Reading offers more than just programs, though. We’re running multiple contests over the summer, including cake decorating and sailboat model building (more below). Kids will be able to claim Book Bucks for the books on their reading logs, which can then be exchanged for prizes (the Prize Room opens Thursday, June 9th). They can also complete the summer reading challenge and participate in events and programs for entries in a prize drawing at the summer wrap-up party. And then there’s the Prize Patrol…

Prize Patrol
Have you heard about our Prize Patrol? It’s new this summer! When you register your children for Summer Reading, one of the questions is: “Would you like to participate in Prize Patrol?” Be sure to answer yes because that means every week we will tally your baby shark’s reading progress and if they are the one that has read the most books for that week, they will get a visit from our outreach team (dressed like this), a lawn sign, a giant prize pack, and a feature on our social media! (Fine print: you need to have your baby shark’s reading log checked every week, by the children’s department, no later than 7 PM each Tuesday. We will call you on Wednesday to make arrangements for your child’s visit!) We can’t wait to see if your baby shark is one of our weekly top readers!
As an aside: Our children’s person loves dressing up as a shark, but she also looks like a giant squeaky toy, so please make sure your animals are contained prior to our visit!
Watercolor Art
All ages are welcome to try their hand at watercolor painting on Monday, June 6th at 10 AM.
Gaming
Assorted gaming activities will be available all summer long Monday–Friday at 4 PM for ages 8–18. There will be board games, group console games, and retro computer games. Some days are special: Wednesdays are retro game day and Thursdays will offer game programming in Scratch.
Just Write
Life is stressing you out and your therapist wants you to journal but that just adds to your work load and stresses you out more even though you know it helps to write because you really love to write and you used to write all the time, once upon a time, but your life has too many distractions now and then there’s your mother…
Come to the library on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month and meet other adult-minded folks and find a quiet place to Just Write.
Robot Building
Join us for a wonderful exploration into the construction of robots! This fun, creative and challenging program will step children through the creation of robots from the ground up! Participants will be working in groups, to design and build a robot. At the end of the program (on July 22nd) participants will put their robots to the test in an Olympic showdown!
Summer Storytimes
The weekly community storytime is doubling this summer! It will be running on Tuesdays (at 2 PM) and Thursdays (at 10 AM) while school is out.
