2023 Special Events

Our special events dates for 2023 have been set! A full list is provided below - please mark your calendars!

On March 21, 2023, Fayette County's citizens will vote on a newly proposed Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), a 1 cent sales tax that is projected to generate $210,000,000 over six years for capital projects County-wide. Tyrone is estimated to receive $13,492,500 from this proposed revenue source.

Fayette County and all of its municipalities are currently working on and closing out projects from the 2017 SPLOST as revenue collection ends this year. Tyrone has received over $10 million from the 2017 SPLOST that has enabled us to complete several much needed road paving & transportation projects, stormwater improvement projects, and park improvements. If approved by voters, the new SPLOST will allow us to continue to bring needed improvements and new amenities to the Town.

You can learn more about the Town's proposed list of projects at www.TyroneGA.gov/SPLOST23. We have also placed information boards in the lobby at Town Hall.

If you have any questions about the proposed SPLOST and any projects, please reach out to us at info@tyrone.org.

Speaking of SPLOST...

It is important to point out that SPLOST funds are collected over a period of 6 years, but local governments are not required to have all projects completed during the collection period. In other words, projects from one SPLOST collection period may be completed during a subsequent SPLOST. In our case, we will still be working on projects funded by 2017 SPLOST monies for several years to come. It is important for the law to provide us this flexibility because we do not receive all anticipated funding at once and, in some cases, cities may not collect all the funding anticipated for a given project.

Here's an example: several improvements to Handley Park were approved in the 2017 SPLOST. Among those were the construction of a new restroom facility for soccer, pond improvements, and parking improvements, etc. The pond improvements have been completed and construction of the restroom/pavilion facility is expected to begin in June 2023. Also of note is that Council recently approved a project that will improve grading (turplaning) on the baseball fields and they will vote on a project to replace the baseball scoreboards during the meeting this week. The two aforementioned projects are not SPLOST funded, but are provided to point out the Town's commitment to improvements at the park.

For more information on the status of 2017 SPLOST projects, please visit our website: www.tyronega.gov/2017-splost. As always, the Town's staff and elected officials are available to answer any questions or concerns you may have about any issues pertaining to the Town. Please see our Contact Directory for direct access to officials and staff.

Tyrone 101 Citizen's Academy

We are in the planning phase of a new program called Tyrone 101, which is an opportunity for citizens to learn more about their Town and its operations. During the process, attendees will meet and build relationships with their elected officials and Town staff members.

Tyrone 101 will be a 6 to 8 week experience, meeting one evening a week for approximately 2 hours. A new topic will be presented each week by our department heads and staff. Topics will include: General Administration - An Intro to Municipal Government; Finance & Budgeting; Leisure Services: Library & Recreation; Permitting; Planning & Zoning; Public Safety & Court; and Public Works.

The start date is currently TBD, but will likely be late Spring/early Summer.

If you're interested in being a part of the inaugural group, please complete the short form at the link below:
