Walker County : Community Update for October 2022

October 7, 2022

Walker County Government, in partnership with Kinetic by Windstream, will address the deployment of a Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) solution to 3,339 homes and businesses in rural Walker County. The project involves extending 323 miles of fiber throughout the Armuchee Valley, Center Post and Kensington communities, among other locations.

“This effort will serve many of the unserved and underserved in our community,” said Chairman Shannon Whitfield, Walker County Board of Commissioners. “It’s difficult to accept there are still places in the county where the internet can only be accessed for school or work by using a dial-up modem, if there is any internet connection at all.”

The Rural Broadband Town Hall Meeting will take place at 6:00 p.m. at the LaFayette-Walker County Public Library, which is located at 305 S. Duke Street in LaFayette. Kinetic by Windstream representatives will be available to answer questions and pre-register individuals interested in learning when the fiber service is available at their home or business.

Following the Town Hall at 7:00 p.m., there will be a presentation from Scenic Land Company updating the community on the McLemore resort project on Lookout Mountain. Topics to be discussed include:

-The Cloudland Lodge, A Curio Collection by Hilton 245-room hotel, conference center and spa

-The Outpost, a new 18-hole “links-inspired” cliff-edge golf course

-Retail and commercial centers

-Medical, fire and security centers

-Available job opportunities. A job fair will be conducted on site.

Shannon Whitfield, Chairman of the Walker County Board of Commissioners, presented a State of the County report to members of the Walker County Chamber of Commerce recently. Some of the highlights included:

-Total liabilities have reduced from $74.2 million in December 2016 to $24 million as of August 31, 2022

-County government's dependence on property taxes remains virtually unchanged from 2017 to 2022. Total revenue from property taxes has only increased 0.00895% from $13,966,654 in 2017 to $14,091,765 in 2022.

-3 projects in northern Walker County are beginning to take shape:

Construction on Gateway at Rossville will wrap up next summer

Home construction in Hawks Ridge will get underway by early 2023

A groundbreaking for Morning Pointe at Happy Valley, a new senior living complex, will take place this month

-118.51 miles of county roads have been paved with TSPLOST funds through 2021

-Walker Transit's Roper route grew to 330 trips in August
