Ransomware Attack Cost One Georgia County Over $400K

Jackson County is $400,000 poorer, thanks to a major ransomware attack earlier this month. The attack affected internal systems, including government IT systems and the 911 emergency system, and held their system hostage until a ransom was paid. In the meantime, county officials had to resort to conducting business the old-fashioned way—pen and paper. The county has partnered with the FBI and a cybersecurity company to look into the situation. Let this experience serve as a warning—you can never be too careful!

Exploring Mars with NASA Engineer Kobie Boykins, Sandy Springs, GA

The Curiosity Rover on Mars is up and running again, and we now know more than ever before about the Red Planet. Head to Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center at City Springs on Thursday, March 14, and hear directly from NASA engineer Kobie Boykins about his experience with exploring Mars. You’ll hear first-hand about the findings and proof of water on Mars and other mysteries of great unknown. Tickets are $35 per person and can be purchased in advance.

It’s Flood Safety Preparedness Week in Georgia

Given the deluge of rain Georgians have had in recent months, Flood Safety Awareness Month comes at an excellent time. Many areas of the state have been hit with particularly heavy rains in the past few months, with little sign of sunshine or dryness in the near future. The Georgia Emergency Management & Homeland Security Agency and the National Weather Service co-sponsor this event running March 11-15, and this year’s event focuses on the near-record rainfalls in 2018 and how residents can prepare.

Lake Oconee Food and Wine Festival, Greensboro, GA

By far one of the most delicious events of the week, the annual Lake Oconee Food and Wine Festival will be this Friday-Sunday, March 15-17, at the Ritz-Carlton in Greensboro. More than 200 vinters from all over the world will be on site for tastings, as well as creative chefs and visual artists for a unique event you won’t forget. Tickets for the Jazz Sunday Brunch, Brew and Que, and wine tasting experience can be purchased separately so you can fit in events around your schedule.
